Featured Project 2025 - Chinchina Bilingue - Future Bilingual Leaders!

Minga House Foundation is developing an English-speaking community in the Andean coffee region to increase opportunities and potential for motivated youth through quality bilingual education at Colegio Menfis, a nonprofit institution founded in 1999 serving 200 students from K5 to 10.  We will provide (20) merit-based scholarships for the 2026 academic year to the top public school low-income students in grades 6th-9th who have demonstrated persistence and perseverance as successful students, overcoming the hardships they have faced in their young lives.  They will be selected amongst their peers based on their academic performance, leadership, community service, and their demonstrated interest and ability to learn English.  Please help us do more good.  We promise, these young leaders will make you very proud.

Minga House Foundation began sponsoring Colegio Menfis in October 2022.  The foundation selected Colegio Menfis as the spearhead of our Chinchiná bilingual program. Since then, Minga House Foundation has invested over $300,000 in infrastructure, increased teacher salaries, furniture, equipment, and scholarships. Our objective is to bring quality bilingual education to our rural community, where it would not usually be possible. We are succeeding!  Help us pick up more momentum by inviting (20) more deserving students currently enrolled in overcrowded, underfunded public schools without a solid bilingual program.

Your donations are now charitable contributions and hence will be deductible expenses in your tax filings in the United States of America and the United Kingdom.
How can you help?
You may make a charitable contribution of any amount to cover the following annual expenses for one or more students, or you may participate as a padrino (sponsor) for one child for $ 2,500, which covers all the following costs for one year at Colegio Menfis @ Chinchiná.

Program Details

Project Overview: Minga House Foundation seeks to raise $50,000 to provide 20 merit-based scholarships for low-income children currently attending crowded, underfunded public schools in the rural coffee-growing region of Chinchiná, Caldas, Colombia. These scholarships will give low-income students access to a high-quality, bilingual education at Colegio Menfis, the first and only bilingual school in the area.
In a region where overcrowded classrooms, limited English instruction, and scarce resources hinder opportunities, this initiative will break the cycle of poverty and empower marginalized youth with the language, skills, and confidence to thrive in an interconnected world.

The Problem
  • Only 3% of Colombians are bilingual, ranking the country 8th in South America.
  • Just 39% of high school graduates enroll in university, with rural rates even lower.
  • Public schools in rural areas typically have an average of 40–45 students per class, with only 1–2 hours of English instruction per week.
  • Students in rural Colombia consistently score lower in language and math compared to their urban peers.

For motivated students in Chinchiná, the opportunity to become bilingual and pursue higher education is almost nonexistent without outside support.

The Solution: Merit-Based Scholarships to cover 100% of school baseline costs, ensuring students can fully participate in all aspects of school life. Each scholarship ($2,500 per year) includes:
  • Tuition, books, and uniform
  • Healthy lunch & snacks
  • Extracurriculars: soccer, swimming, chess, judo
  • English immersion camps during school breaks
  • Leadership & career workshops
  • Bi-annual school excursions and research projects

Participating students will carry on-going responsibilities in maintaining a minimum of 80% (3.0 or B) grade point average, demonstrate leadership, perform 2 hours of community service, and demonstrate progression on acquiring English speaking fluency, ensuring shared responsibility and commitment. Failure to pass two quarterly evaluations by the Academic Council will result in discontinuation of the program.

Beyond Scholarships: Building a Bilingual Culture.  The program extends outside the classroom to create a community-wide movement for bilingualism through:
  • English Songs Festival
  • Debate & Conversation Clubs
  • Spelling Bee & Chess Club
  • International Exchange & Young Ambassador Programs
  • Career Planning Workshops
  • Bilingual Tour Guide Challenge
  • Worldschooling Ambassador Program

These activities motivate students, celebrate progress, and bring English into everyday life.

Beneficiaries
  • 20 students (grades 6–11) from Chinchiná and surrounding rural villages (ages 12–17). Students are selected based on merit, leadership, community service, and English fluency progression.
  • A community of 3,500 students (grades 6-10) will compete for the 20 scholarships, motivating all students to strive for their goals.
  • Chinchina will not only see 20 students reach their full potential through quality bilingual education, but will also see the overall student population strive and improve, given a realistic and tangible reward for their efforts.  This campaign will foster a culture of attainment and rewards based on persistence and perseverance.

Community & Partnerships. Key partners include:
  • Colegio Menfis – implementing school
  • Minga House Foundation – project lead
  • Parents’ Association, Local Government (Alcaldía de Chinchina), Chamber of Commerce, and Community Neighborhood Committees – supporting partners

Minga House has already invested in excess of $300,000 since October 2022 in sponsoring Colegio Menfis, paying previous debt as a private institution, converting it into a nonprofit bilingual school, increasing teachers' salaries, upgrading infrastructure, providing student scholarships, and purchasing furniture and equipment. The first graduating class is scheduled for 2027.

Impact
  • Short-Term (12 months - 2026): 20 students enrolled with full support, improved English skills, and measurable academic growth.
  • Long-Term (2–5 years): 100% of participants complete at least 1 CEFR level annually; graduates access higher education and employment opportunities that would otherwise be out of reach.
  • Community Impact: A local culture of academic excellence and bilingualism, positioning Chinchiná as a model for rural education transformation in Colombia.

Why Fund This Project?
  • Proven commitment: $300,000 invested by Minga House to date.
  • Clear ROI: $2,500 = 1 student transformed, family uplifted, community inspired.
  • Sustainable: Families co-invest, community institutions are engaged, and annual fundraising ensures long-term continuity.
  • Engaging for donors: Sponsors are invited to visit, volunteer, mentor, and witness impact firsthand.

Call to Action:
With
your support, we can turn the resilience of Colombia’s rural youth into a pathway of hope and opportunity. Together, we can fund 20 scholarships, create a model for rural bilingual education, and empower students to lead Colombia’s future.

Investment needed: $50,000

Impact: 20 lives transformed, one community uplifted, a nation inspired.

Colombian children love futbol!  Perhaps greater than Catholocism, futbol dominates the Colombian culture.   Utilizing sports to develop youth into forged leaders of the community is very important.  Help us pay for club team fees so all kids have afterschool programs that they belong to.
